A Message from the President
Hi Fellow Quilters,
The leaves are dropping, fall is upon us. It doesn’t seem
possible that we are preparing for our 3rd guild meeting of the
2009-2010 year. How great to have had Jo Coons with us last
month.
Thanks for your cooperation with “No Photos Please” & “Click
Away” sign. We still have a number of folks that will need their
“mug shot” taken at the next meeting.
We have been asked to display some items at the Portsmouth
library in January. Set up will take place on January 8th. There
will be a reception on January 9th from 10:00-2:00. Your items
can be brought home on January 25th. Be thinking about what
you’d like to display.
In looking over the blue papers from the October meeting, it
appears that the guild’s favorite Quilt Shop is Folk Art Quilts.
The quilter’s Stash was second. Barrington Fabric, Emma’s
Cupboard & Just Quilts were next. After that it was Heartbeat &
Tumbleweed on the Cape. As a guild, you listed 23 favorites.
Looking ahead to December, we will be doing several things.
Each guild member is asked to bring a wrapped gift. It could be
hand made, purchased for no more than $10 or something you
have at you home that you no longer need. We will also be
collecting money to help pay the rent of a struggling family. We
will be having a “covered dish” dinner so please arrive at 6:00pm,
not the usual 7:00 pm. The community service committee is
putting together baskets for preemie babies. We’d like to include
a tiny toy/rattle in each basket. Please bring them in November
and December.
Please make a note of the changes in guild meeting dates.
February & March will be on the 1st Wednesday nights, Feb 3rd &
March 3rd. April’s meeting will be on the second Thursday, April
8th
See you in November.
Fondly,
Nancy Shaw Burgess

OCTOBER MEETING MINUTES
Meeting was called to order at 7:10 PM by

There was no interest at the October meeting.
Five new members were introduced to the
guild: Megan Gorganson, Eleanor Flowers,
Mary Ellen Frias, Pat De Orchis, and Noreen
McGeary. One member signed up for
renewal: Louisa Jones. Welcome to the
Quilters by the Sea quilting guild ladies!
Five (5) guests attended the October meeting:

Elaine St. Ours and Paula Korech.
Preemie Hats were displayed by Kathy Little
as part of the community service. Kathy has
patterns for the preemie caps. Those
interested in completing a Preemie quilt, the
quilts need to be 24in squares. Kathy
contacted the shelters in request for needs and
they expressed a need for linens: pillow cases
(both juvenile and adult).
Sue Travers notified the guild member of a
fabric consignment shop, called Fabric
Treasures. The split would be a 50/50 split.
The shop is located on County St, Somerset,
MA (RT 138), after Ma Raffa’s. The shop
hosts a stash swap (1 yard size minimum) on
the 3rd Saturday of every month at 1:00pm.
Aggie Keeney drew the raffle tickets. Sonya
Perry won the door prize. Paula Faria received a
door prize from an anonymous donation. Gale
Palladino won the raffle prize. Shirley Saulnier
won the FOM.
Bernadette Tout announced that the directories
have been distributed and to contact Aggie
Keeney if anyone needs one.
Judy Messinger thanked the Raffle Committee
for their efforts. Judy provided each member
with a set of numbered raffle tickets for sale to
be sold. Please return tickets and / or money to
Judy Messinger by October 7th, 2010. Each
member is asked to sell 5 raffle books. Shirley
Fisher will be taking the quilt to Cape Cod for
display. ‘Quilter’s Stash, a quilt shop in
Attleboro, MA may be able to have it hang in
their shop as well.
Patty and Joann, co-owners of Just Quilts, will
display the raffle quilt in their shop, located in
Bristol, RI.
The next board meeting will be held at Gale
Palladino’s home at 7:00 on October 8, 2009.
Help for the quilt show is being requested.
Loretta Krebel, Ruth Davis and Aggie Keeney
will be on the 2010 Quilt Show committee. A
tentative date for the next QBS quilt show is
October 16/17, 2010 located at the Portsmouth
Middle School.
Jo Coon, was introduced for the ‘In the
Beginning’ trunk show. Jo started the lecture by
telling the audience that quilting has always been
around, even since the cave man era. The cave
men were breadwinners and the cave women
were domestic engineers. The women would
create clothes from animal skins and eventually
learned to embellish their work with shells, and
other objects.
As quilting evolved, through the 13th Century,
needlework was started. Pagan celebrations
incorporated the ‘Green Man’ in green
leaves, chasing the maidens.
By the 17th Century, King James era, crewel
became pop incorporated the ‘Green Man’ in
green ular. Shipping threads from Spain and
England, people were able to create elaborate
works of art. This artwork later became
known as the Jacobean, coined after King
James, posthumously.
During the 18th Century, William Morris was
a popular artist. He was well-known for the
pineapple, tiffany lamps, tapestry and
wallpaper.
After the brief history of quilting, Jo
presented her wonderful quilts providing her
own evolution of quilting. In 1960, Jo was a
National Teacher and a member of the
National Quilters Society. In 1980 through
1989, she owned a quilt shop.

Community Service
The guild will be providing bags filled with
preemie quilts, hats and toys to parents that
reside at the Ronald McDonald House in
Providence while their premature babies are
being cared for at Women & Infants Hospital.
At this time we have plenty of quilts. I of
course will not turn away any quilts that have
already been made. We are in need of
preemie knitted hats and store bought hand
toys such as rattles, bite toys, etc… Patterns
for the knitted hats will be provided at the
meeting as well as on the website. Please
bring any completed hats and toys to the
November meeting so I can start filling the
bags and deliver them. This will be an
ongoing project for the guild.
We will be collecting food at the November
meeting. Non-perishable food as you already
know is what we collect. Please make sure the
food is not expired. Make sure the “ sell by
date” is in the future.
Our new project for this term is to make
pillowcases for young children which will be
put into backpacks for children of deployed
service men and women. This is a project,
which has originated with 4H called “Hero
Packs.” They are small back packs filled with
such things as communications materials
(stationery, pens, pencils, crayons), comfort
items such as stuffed animals or even a
“blankie,” fun items such as Play Dough and
assorted things that fall into the “stocking
stuffer” category. Here is the website which
gives more detail about the project:
http://cels.uri.edu/news/nHeroes.aspx. The
packs are then presented to the children of
deployed soldiers at deployment ceremonies.
I will talk more about this at the November
meeting.
Plans for December will also be discussed at
the November meeting.
If any juvenile quilts are finished, I will more
than happy to take them and make another
donation to an area shelter.
