THE RAFFLE QUILT HAS BEEN COMPLETED !!!!!!

It was a great privilege to present the 2007/2008 Raffle Quilt to the membership at the September
meeting. I wish to again thank the dedicated members of the guild who participated in the
planning, design and creation of a beautiful quilt. We hope that it will serve as a great fund raising
vehicle for QBS over the coming months.

A Raffle Quilt Committee was formed during the latter part of Aggie Keeney’s term as President.
That group planned the quilt design, created the work plan and timeline for getting it made, did
the shopping for fabrics and supplies and did all of the piecing for the quilt top center which was
constructed in quadrants. Many thanks to those committee members: Betty Davis, Judy
Messenger, Loretta Krebel, Lorna Cogswell and Eleanor Krol. When you look at the quilt, you will
see from the perfect points in the stars and the placement of color throughout the quilt center that
this group did a super job. Betty took on the job of sewing on the binding and did the lion’s share
of hand finishing it as well. We were able to work effectively and efficiently thanks to Ruth Davis
who allowed us to use her spacious quilt studio space. It gave us the room we needed for working
on such a large quilt as well as for performing multiple tasks simultaneously. Ruth’s moral support
throughout the process was invaluable too!

The appliqué borders were planned and constructed under the direction of Judy Messenger. Judy
also did a lot of the hand sewing herself. Joining her in working on the borders were Colleen
Craveiro, Aggie Keeney and Sandy Reynolds. Each flower and leaf in the border has multiple
points and the vine is VERY long and curvy, so it was truly a test of this group’s patience and skill.
The results speak for themselves – the border is a perfect frame for the quilt.
QBS’ own Cindy Janetakos completed the long arm quilting in record time and did a gorgeous job.
Cindy used lightweight wool batting which makes the quilt light and soft despite its large size.
The quilt made its debut at Images in Lowell in August for a day where we sold our first 100 raffle
tickets. Members of the Raffle Quilt Committee sold tickets and did certain duties for the quilt
show in exchange for display space. Also helping us out in Lowell were QBS members Mary
Craveiro, Marie Capobianco, Sonya Perry and Ruth Davis.

Here is the headline information about the Raffle Quilt:

• Name: "Red Stars at Night - A Quilter's Delight"
• Quilt Design: The pattern for the quilt top center came from the publication "Coffee Time Quilts"
by Cathy Wierzbicki and published by "That Patchwork Place". The appliqué border design was
adapted from a picture of a Feather-Edged Star quilt made by Mary Schafer in 1984 and
published in "Sets & Borders" by Gwen Marston and Joe Cunningham.
• Quilt Size: 114" X 90"
• Fabrics: 40 different fabrics used - all 100% quilt shop quality cotton
• Quilt batting: Light weight wool

I know that I speak for every member of the Raffle Quilt Committee when I tell you that the whole
project was a lot of work, a lot of time, a lot of fabric, a lot of thread, but most of all, a lot of fun
and creative satisfaction. Based on our experience, we urge one or a group of members to step
forward to begin the formation of the effort for the next raffle quilt. You will have the advantage of
a long working timeline if you get started soon. We would be more than happy to share with you
whatever we can from our experience.

In the meantime, please sell LOTS of raffle tickets for this quilt and support the various marketing
efforts for it that are being planned.
